Main Street Deli

CHICKPEAS: 4

I am desperately trying to catch up on some blogging.  I have gotten too far behind!  Enjoy some of these short posts.  If the restaurant got a 4 or above, you will definitely see a more thorough post when we eventually make our way back!

I went to the Main Street Deli with an Agawam native and another friend.  I was immediately impressed with the selection of sandwich options.  When you walk in, a large board presents creative sandwich combinations along with the traditional classics.  You order at the counter near the front of the restaurant, and are given a number.  There are three dining rooms/areas to chose from, all painted in cozy colors with solid wood tables.

I was not surprised at all when my friend Victoria ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich and a side of sweet potato fries.  I stole one of her fries, they were really good!

Our other friend (who was kind enough to treat us!) ordered something that I can no longer remember!

I ordered a turkey and cranberry sandwich.  The sandwich was served warm with perfectly toasted bread!

I will definitely be bringing my fiance to the Main Street Deli, especially this summer since it is pretty close to a driving range we like to go to!

Munich Haus

CHICKPEAS: 4

We love going to the Munich Haus Restaurant in Chicopee, MA for drinks and/or dinner.  The Munich Haus has delicious German food, and is a great value if you buy a restaurant.com gift certificate (which are an even better deal if you get them on sale!).   The staff wear traditional German outfits and they sometimes have an accordion player.  The accordion player can be a little loud, as it was on this night.  If that bothers you, request a seat in the bar area.  They have some nice cozy booths.

One of the things we love about the Munich Haus is the value.  The servings are large and the entrees come with soup or a salad (remember when that used to be standard at most restaurants?!).  The salad is different that your standard house salad with some varieties of beans and other things on it.  They also bring out homemade potato chips with a sour cream based dip when you are first seated.  The entrees typically range from $15 to $20.

Salad
I ordered jaeger schnitzel (tender pork loin lightly breaded and pan fried for a golden finish with a wild mushroom sauce).  It came with a choice of sides. I selected the spatzle and cabbage.  Everything was great.

My fiance ordered french onion soup to start.

French Onion Soup

His meal was a Bavarian platter, which included pfalezer, nuerenberger bratwurst, sauerbraten, jaeger schnitzel, potato pancake, red cabbage, sauerkraut and spatzle.  Don't ask me which is what.

Bavarian Platter

To finish off, we got some stuffed cookies (this was before I gave up sweets for lent!).  These cookies are so good.  The chocolate stuffed chocolate chip one is our favorite.  In the past, we have split a piece of cake. Be warned: they are enormous pieces.

Stuffed Cookie

Overall, Munich Haus is a fun place to go for dinner with friends or family.  The food is delicious and reasonably priced.  The atmosphere tops it off.  Keep an eye on their special events (such as wild game dinners) as well!

Max Burger

CHICKPEAS: 4

We went to Max Burger in West Hartford about a month or so ago on a Sunday night.  It was PACKED!  We were out to celebrate our anniversary at the same restaurant where we went on our first date, everyone else was out to celebrate Washington's birthday.  There was about a 30 minute wait when we arrived, so we found some seats at the bar.  Based on the tension and speed of the waitstaff, they appeared to be understaffed.  They likely forgot about Washington's birthday when making the schedule.  Whoops.

One neat thing about Max Burger is they take your cell phone number at the hostess desk and then text you when your table is ready.  A drink for each of us later and my fiances phone beeped.  We were up! (This is sort of similar to a service called textaurant)

We were seated at a table in the lower section of the dining area.  Upon arriving, it appeared the people sitting on both sides of us were a bit unhappy with their service.  Again, Max Burger was a bit understaffed, but everyone working was hustling around.  Because the tables were pretty close together we were privy to these customer's complaints to the manager.  They were pretty petty.  The type of thing you might mention to the waitress and then let it go.  People in West Hartford must be pretty hard to please, or maybe just looking for a free meal.  The complaints continued from both tables for most of the night.

Some example complaints:
1.) Wife ordered a wedge salad with bleu cheese dressing and some sort of entree, Husband ordered a burger and substituted a side salad for his fries.  They were upset that the salads were not the same size, type and were not served at the same time (husbands came on the same plate as the burger).

2.) Older son orders adult meal and a milkshake.  Younger son orders children's meal (which I believe comes with a drink) and a milkshake.  Older son gets adult size milkshake.  Younger son gets a child size milkshake. Parent's upset about the size difference.  Instead of requesting a second milkshake for the younger son, they proceeded to make a scene about it.

3.) Parent's dispute that their son's child sized burger was actually 5oz.  Manager and waitress explain that the chef weighs all of the meat and that meat shrinks when cooked.  Child then proceeds to only eat about 1/2 of the burger.  Looked like 5 oz. to us!

4.) Max Burger has plates that say "Max Burger" on them.  A woman complained that the server had placed the plate such that "Max Burger" was upside down.  (Really??!!)

At the end of the night, another customer sitting at a table near us (not one of the complainers) almost started a fight with the complaining customers defending our waitress.  She really was trying her hardest and we had no complaints about our own service.  Everything was timely, correctly portioned and delicious.

Ok, now onto the food.

We ordered chicken cordon blue balls to begin.  They were good, but probably not something I would order again.

Chicken Cordon Bleu Balls
I ordered a a tuna burger with picked vegetables on a sesame roll with eggplant fries on the side.  The burger was delicious.  Seared just a little bit on the outside.  The eggplant fries are interesting.  A little juicy.  They need to be eaten right when made and probably would not reheat well.

Tuna Burger
For dessert, we split something that I believe was called a s'mores pie.  A graham cracker crust was topped with a chilled thick chocolate pudding/mouse.  On top was a marshmallow that had been torched just a little bit so it was melted and warm.  A delicious ending to our meal!

We will be back again in a year for our next anniversary (if not before)!

Kathy's Dinner

CHICKPEAS: 4

6 Strong Ave, Northampton, MA

On our way to the Yankee Candle Flagship Store, we stopped for breakfast in Northampton.  This was a fairly impromptu trip, so I looked for a diner on our way.  Similar to my post office experience, the first diner we went to was closed.  We headed back into town to find Kathy's Diner and were quite pleased we did!  I discovered another blog that details the history of Kathy's.  It has quite the history, and has had many names.

Aside from the authentic diner charm, we were initially impressed by the holiday decor.

Place mats and Mugs

The walls were also are decorated with all sorts of memorabilia, which helped keep the conversation going, as people watching was not really an option.  It was not very busy the day we went, and I suspect it was because the colleges were on break.

Kathy's has a huge selection of pancakes, with all sorts of fruits, nuts and more in them.  My Fiance ordered banana chocolate chip pancakes and a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich.

I ordered Texas french toast and a side of eggs.

Everything was delicious and our waitress was very pleasant.  With a coffee, our bill was around $13.

It should be noted that Kathy's is open until 2am on the weekends!

Pho Saigon

CHICKPEAS: 4

When we saw that Pho Saigon was ranked as the number one restaurant in Springfield, MA on tripadvisor.com, we bumped it up on the list of places we needed to try.  We went last Friday night, right before going to Bright Nights.

We drove through a less than pleasant area of Springfield on our way there, but the location of Pho Saigon felt much safer.  We were able to find parking on the street in front of the restaurant, but I imagine that parking can sometimes be difficult to find.

We arrived around 8pm and two tables had just opened up.  The reviews online all comment on spectacular service and they certainly lived up to their reputation. The waiter spent a good two minutes carefully wiping and then drying the table and was always refilling our water and respectfully checking in.

Neither of us have much experience with Vietnamese food, but the menu had pretty thorough explanations.

To start, we got fresh spring rolls with chicken, shrimp, vermicelli, and fresh vegetables wrapped in rice paper and served with a very delicious peanut sauce.

Deliciousness

I ordered pho with rare steak, beef meatballs, brisket, flank, tendon and rice noodles.  The serving size was enormous and it was quite delicious.  My fiance had the smaller version of pho and another appetizer as his meal.

The pho came with a plate of sprouts, basil, lime and peppers for you to use as you pleased.

We each had a different method to eating our pho.

I ate everything out of the broth first

My Fiance at all the broth first

We were both stuffed with our pho and barely touched the other appetizer, steamed rice crepes with pork.

Additionally, we got a bottle of wine.  Wine lovers should be warned that there is no wine list.  The menu has a list of 6 or so varieties of wine by type.  There is no information about vineyard or year.

All in all, we spent around $50.  Next time we go, we will have to make an effort to order off more than the first page of the menu!

Partners Restaurant

CHICKPEAS: 4

Before we discovered Copperline, we used to go to Partners a fair amount.  We still go when meeting up with friends from Southwick, as we did last weekend before tree hunting.  I enjoy Partners because their menu has a selection of healthy options (fruit cups, wheat pancakes, sweet potato pancakes and more) as well as the less healthy diner foods.  Partners is usually packed on Sunday mornings, so get there early if you don't want to wait.

Here is what we had to eat (four of us...):

Grilled Muffin

Asparagus and Mushroom Skillet (daily specail)
Side of Home Fries with Onions

Scrambled Eggs, Chocolate Chip Pancakes and Sausage

Bacon, Egg and Cheese Sandwich
Corned Beef Hash, Eggs, Home Fries and Toast

The Asparagus and Mushroom Skillet was delicious, although heavy on asparagus and light on mushrooms.  Everyone else enjoyed their meals as well.  I will say the service was a little below par the day we went, but it is typically pretty good.

Total Bill (incl. 2 chocolate milks and 3 coffees): $42

Sakura Sushi Buffet

CHICKPEAS: 4

We both love sushi and were delighted to hear about an all you can eat sushi buffet in Northampton.  We have gone probably 5 or so times in the last two months.   Sakura is currently running a special through the rest of the year.

The deal:
All you can eat lunch or dinner: $9.99 (dinner is normally $15.99)
Happy Hour from 2:30-4:30pm: $6.99

Now, we aren't people who frequent buffets on a regular basis, but we feel that we need to take full advantage of their current special!  Sakura has an assortment of traditional Chinese dishes including fried rice, lo mien, spare ribs, crab rangoon, and more for those who don't like sushi.  Additionally, there are some Japanese dishes that I won't try to name.  They have a few soups, a selection of fresh fruit, and some desserts.  The Chinese dishes are less greasy than I would expect at a buffet and are in general pretty good.  The sushi is good.  I usually get some maki and a lot of nigiri.  I will say that the sushi has less fish in it than you would find at an upscale sushi restaurant, and I believe even less during the happy hour.  Additionally, we recommend filling up on dinner because the desserts are lacking (although there is a soft serve machine if you like ice cream).  Still, we believe it is a good value and as mentioned we continue to go back for more!

Here are some plates from various trips:

Copperline Eatery for Breakfast

CHICKPEAS: 4

As I have mentioned, we LOVE Copperline Eatery in Chicopee, MA.  On a recent weekend, we went for breakfast on Sunday.  The line was out the door when we arrived, as Sunday is definitely their busiest day.  Thankfully, we were able to snag a couple of seats at the counter.  While I normally wouldn't post twice about the same place in such a short time frame, I had to share the new information we got by sitting at the bar.

Copper Counter
  1.  The counter is copper. Get it...?
  2. The homefries are premade in batches and stored on the stove.  Then they are moved to the grill where they sit beneath the ham to get some extra flavor until you order them!  DELICIOUS!
  3. If you go on a Sunday and there is a long line, make sure you check the bar.  Often there are seats available.

Since we are talking about it anyways, here is what we ate...

Tunnel Bar

CHICKPEAS: 4

Grasshopper Martini

A couple of weeks ago, we went to the Tunnel Bar in Northampton with friends.  The Tunnel Bar is known for their martinis and gets its name from actually being in a tunnel.   As you walk in on the street end, there are sets of tables and armchairs on both sides.  The bar is about halfway down the tunnel, complete with stools. The clientele varied in age, though mostly in the late 20's or older range.  If you are claustrophobic, this bar might not be a good choice.  Otherwise, it has tons of character and is a fun spot.

It can be a little tough to find free parking in Northampton on a weekend night, but there are pay lots available. We got there around 8:30 and were able to get a table and two chairs for our party of four.  We watched like vultures and eventually got a table and four chairs.  I would recommend getting their early if you are with a big group and want to be able to sit.

Copperline Eatery

CHICKPEAS: 4

My Fiance and I have recently discovered Copperline Eatery. While this doesn't seem surprising since I just moved here, he has lived in the area for three years.  Since our first trip on October 1st, we have been at least five times for breakfast and dinner.  We tried to go back again this morning (would have been our third day in a row... don't judge) but there was a line out the door.

Copperline is in the back of a convenience store at 409 Broadway in Chicopee.  You can enter through the front or on the side.  There is a parking lot on the right side (if facing the building) and there is additional parking on the street.  Copperline is seat yourself, and all tables are booths.

On a recent trip for dinner my Fiance and I got a full carafe of wine ($7, though some varieties are less expensive), a bowl of clam chowder, chicken quesadillas, a buffalo chicken salad and a cranberry walnut chicken salad.  The bill was somewhere around $25.  Cheap date!

PROs: Price, Portions, Keno

CONs: Service is a bit slow sometimes, packed on Sunday mornings, only open for dinner Thursdays and Fridays til 7:30pm.

Wine ($7!)

Clam Chowder

Cranberry Walnut Chicken Salad

Buffalo Chicken Salad

Quesadilla

Have you been to Copperline?  Love or hate?
